All generalizations are false by WokTiny. Forum: General.

This one comes from the irc channel... All generalizations are false. There are absolutely no absolutes. There is an exception to every rule. What other ironic, self-disproving quips are out there? Also, is there a word for a phrase that disproves itself? |

The phrase "performative contradiction" might be what you are looking for. I don't think "There is an exception to every rule" actually does disprove itself. Maybe I'm not reading as much into the word "rule" as you are. |

If this sentance is true, then this sentance is false. x -> ~x |

If this sentance is true, then this sentance is false. You could just say "This sentence is False"... but that's not really saying anything |

Observation, more like, expounded upon in rule format. |

"All generalizations are false, except this one." "There are absolutely no absolutes, except this one." "There is an exception to every rule, except this one." How's that? If you're getting picky about what's a "rule" you're off topic :P |

JUMBO SHRIMP I laughed my head off at the title of this thread. Also, when you are viewing it, the top bar says that "All Generalizations are False on Decorum" which unfortunately makes it not so much of a generalization anymore. Maybe this is a self-paradoxical-correcting forum. |
user 326 posts 2007-12-17 03:34:20 |
JUMBO SHRIMP oxymorons are easy to come up with, but it doesn't make the phrase false quite like all generalizations are false does... |

Damn, I'll have to get more risky, like a fox. |

Says Wikipedia (emphasis is mine):For any two related concepts, A and B; A is considered a generalization of concept B if and only if: Thus, by definition, every generalization is false for some items. |

"All Generalizations are False on Decorum" FINALLY we got a joke out of the "... on Decorum" thing. It's still a bit lame, but it's there. So are generalizations not false elsewhere? |
user 326 posts 2007-12-17 12:56:42 |
Thus, by definition, every generalization is false for some items. ...but, does that case describe all generalizations? (including the generalization that all generalizations are false?) |
administrator 84 posts 2007-12-17 19:32:17 |
...but, does that case describe all generalizations? That isn't a generalization, because it's true by definition. |
user 326 posts 2007-12-20 14:39:47 |
... well that didn't get very far ... |

If it's true by definition, liefKb, then it disproves itself. That's the entire point. Sense of humor ftw. Anywho, I also like the rule "rules were meant to be broken," but it would have to be made a bit more absolute to imply that that rule itself is broken, which then makes it false. |
administrator 84 posts 2007-12-29 08:54:05 |
If it's true by definition, liefKb, then it disproves itself. No it doesn't, because it isn't a generalization and thus isn't talking about itself.. |
user 144 posts 2007-12-30 00:07:17 |
'Rules were meant to be broken' isn't exactly a rule. If it were a rule then everyone would be living in chaos. It's just what people say in movies to get nerds to do cool stuff like blow up a cat. |
user 144 posts 2007-12-30 00:09:37 |
Not that i recommend anyone blows up a cat or that i think it's cool to do that... i'm kinda digging a hole for myself here. Post editing yet? you know it makes sense. |

How do you make a cat say 'woof'? Pour petrol on it then put a match to it. Sorry. That was terrible of me. Nobody has a right to tell jokes like that. |

This is sort of on the same level. One of the questions from College Geometry is to answer the following: "This sentence is false." and we have to decide whether the statement is true or false. |
