That fly needs to update her profile now. She got renamed to Sophophora melanogaster, thanks to a surprising discovery that she was actually adopted! (And yeah, this comic is really the first thing I thought of on seeing the headline.) |

I would like to submit a bug report. For some reason, the forum is not displaying any new posts other than my own. The situation has been critical for about two weeks, but has been chronically worsening for most of half a year. It may be related to another bug that prevents new comics from showing up. Please advise. :( |

I liked some fiction-type stuff that Darcey had written on the xkcd forum and found this website on her forum profile. I should hope not. That's how I got here. As I have been told, I think by a friend, you cannot legitimately claim that you are tired unless you have gone 72 hours straight with no sleep. And no pansy at-your-computer-the-whole-time shit; it is required that you have been physically active the entire time. I have been at a computer for close to 24 hours once, and I can tell where to shove legitimacy. I was fucking tired. |

Darcey still occasionally does stuff on Facebook, so I presume she neither died nor got kidnapped by another evil research institution for experiments. Unless you count college, of course. (She said Rochester, incidentally.) I wish she were around, though. I guess there is no time for comics anymore, but she only posts here once a month and is never on IM either... Edit: Until now! |

Surely - although he faces the distinct possibility of being apprehended and having no choice at all, which is a lot worse than voluntary confession (in several ways). Therefore if I were John, I would turn myself in. And if John showed up at my door one evening and asked me for advice, I would likewise tell him to do so. |

On reevaluation, I must admit that the second time I sat down for a game of Magic, I had to cut it short due to a nasty stomach virus. I couldn't hold on to my meals for several days. Also, that evening found me with my index finger stuck in a soda bottle while trying to fish out a straw. It was swollen up like hell, and it took an hour or so to get it off. I suspect that the rotten day traumatized me. I never played it again. =P |

I've noticed no trend in XMPP contacts. But my ICQ contacts are online in the afternoon, while my AIM contacts are online late at night and early morning. The cause for this correlation is pretty obvious, and will be seen clearly once all the Americans here have asked "What The Fuck is ICQ". |

Given that he's not a threat to society, jail time is pointless. [...] The ultimate goal of rehabilitation is to prevent repeat offenses. Jail is not just a storage bin for people who would be dangerous to have on the streets. It is also a symbolic loss of control and freedom of movement, and a drastic change of surroundings. This gives the criminal an opportunity to ponder. On the assumption that the crime could have been avoided (no assisted suicide) or was even unjustified (no self-defense), he needs an opportunity for regret. If only for the benefit of his own mental state, or "soul" (in an atheistic sense). Rehabilitation is at least as important for the individual himself as for the safety of those around him. |

I have just found, through interesting circumstances (which involve an old cassette tape by the Andean band Hinantillan from 1986), the following poem by Federico Garcia Lorca, which I felt I needed to share. ¡Oh, guitarra! Corazón malherido por cinco espadas. When the guitar begins to cry It rends the chords of the sunrise When the guitar begins to cry It is useless to silence it, it cannot be silenced. It cries monotonously like the mourning of water, The way wind weeps over the snow. It is impossible to silence it, It weeps for distant things. The hot sand of the south Thirsty for the white camelias It decries the arrow shot wide of the target The darkening of the hour without the promise of morning. And the first dead bird Fallen from the branch. Oh, guitar, Your heart cruelly wounded by five sharp swords. I need to learn Spanish. That sounds so beautiful... |

JPEGs are by definition not lossless (also called "lossy") -- the png format is by definition lossless. Apologies for the imprecise terminology. I used "lossless" to mean "high quality". Of course JPEG is never actually lossless; MS Paint just saves JPEG very badly, such that the quality is far worse than you'd expect from a file of that size. Edit: Darcey misused the term first though. :P |

Ouch. Sorry for being a pest. I wish you a good recovery. |

NYT has an interesting op ed where they claim that the Irish are drunken ungrateful bumpkins for rejecting the treaty. Rather disappointing. I tend to like the NYT normallly. Oh, and supposedly rejecting the Lisbon Treaty is done out of a hesitation to include Turkey in the EU. Well, if they say so. Turkey can join the EU once they grow up about Cyprus, abolish the death penalty and stop imprisoning people for Insulting Turkishness. This is ridiculous. It's not about skin color, it's not about religion (and Turkey is secular to a fault anyway), it's simply about childish nationalism. You can't engage in dogfights with a military ally and complain when the international community looks at you in a funny way. |

Darcey, it's that lossless with just about anything other than MS Paint. Personally, I use ImageMagick, which is a command-line program that's installed on most Linux systems by default, but is available for Windows too. Its as easy as "convert dream.png dream.jpg" or "convert -scale 200x dream.png dream.jpg" for scaling proportionally to a width of 200 pixels. =) |

none of them will be applicable in the real world. Such as universal health care. Europe is real. Seriously, Hillary's healthcare ideas are the one thing I'll give her over Obama. The way things are going, unless you socialize healthcare, you will soon end up with mandatory euthanasia at age 60, because private enterprise gives a flying gentle hug about people's lives when they're not productive. |

Whoa. Yeah, this one's a biggy. I had trouble solving it myself just now, after forgetting all the keys and clear texts. It *is* possible, though, even though there's a possible red herring in 5., where multiple words yield the letter you want of the secret society, but only one will make sense once you get to 2. |
